Howard University s Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel Essay

Session 1 The sermons given at Howard University’s Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel are known to liven up a calm Sunday morning. On the morning of September 18th, I expected the same caliber speaker that had graced the pulpit all of the previous weekends. What I didn’t expect on that Sunday was to see Michael Eric Dyson, a man whose name stuck a chord with most of the public. E even though his name had been on the itinerary since the first chapel service, I was still in shock to see him in person. I had seen him once before earlier in the year at Hampton University’s graduation. If his sermon was anything like his commencement speech, I reckoned that I was in for a show - and that I was. Dyson started off with the usual greeting to the crowd and expressed his appreciation for being invited back to Howard’s chapel for another year in a row. It took only a few moments for him to delve into the hot topics of the time. The topics consisted of black lives in America, whiteness on both the national and international scale, and, of course, Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump. Dyson preached about the importance of embracing black women - from their hair, to their bodies, to their demeanor, their strength, everything - and the essential roles that black women have always played in the lives of black men, the history of America, and the history of the world. He cracked many jokes and, even with the occasional profane language, all of the church laughed in agreement.
